A Funny Halloween Memory October 30, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Elizabeth @ 9:58 PM

On one of the yahoo China adoption groups that I am in, an interesting discussion was started. I’ll try to be brief: an adoptive parent posted that a girl in her daughter’s class was bragging about dressing up as a “Chinese girl” this year for Halloween. There launched a discussion back and forth over whether or not this is racist or offensive or just an innocent child thinking a Chinese girl is beautiful and exotic. I don’t really feel like getting into all that, but it brought back a very funny memory for me.

By the time I came along, my family didn’t celebrate Halloween…….it being the devil’s holiday and all that. So I can honestly say, I don’t think I have ever been trick or treating or worn a traditional Halloween costume. We did, however, participate in our church’s Halloween alternative: Hallelujah Night!! At Hallelujah Night, you were supposed to dress up as a Bible character and you got candy, there were games, etc. So one Hallelujah night, my single mother came home from working her nurse’s job to her 3 daughters. My sisters were probably old enough not to care whether or not they dressed up, but I wanted to know, “What am I going to be for Hallelujah Night?”. Which of course started in, like, an hour. I must give her credit, because she came up with a pretty unique idea right on the spot. Since we didn’t have a costume or a plan, she told me I could be…….are you ready for this???? Whosoever. You know whosoever!! They are mentioned in the Bible all the time!! What does whosoever look like, you ask? Well that is the beauty of it. Whosoever is anybody and in our house that year, whosoever was Asian and wore a kimono. My mom had this blue, satin-y, knee-length, kimono style robe, and I thought it was the most beautiful, exotic thing I had ever seen. So I got to wear that and she did a little eyeliner trick on my eye to make me look slightly Asian, and voila, I became whosoever. If anyone can beat that for a Halloween costume, I would love for you to leave a comment and tell me!!
